The tools inside Anjal

Anjal is called an input method. It also incorporates a suite of professionally crafted Tamil typefaces, a dictionary, a reader and a character palette — all of them working inside whatever you are already writing in.

  • Intelligent predictive input

Learns how you write, and suggests the words and phrases you reach for most.

  • Expanded font families

Brand new designs drawn for books, posters and banners, alongside the improved Anjal faces.

  • Wordlist editor

See and manage the words Anjal has learned — and add your own, quickly.

  • Built-in dictionaries

Look a word up across several sources without leaving what you are writing in.

  • Solvan, the text-to-speech reader

Reads Tamil aloud, correctly, from any application on your machine.

  • Character palette

Find and insert what is not on your keyboard — Tamil signs, Grantha letters, symbols — each named, and keep your own set for quick reach.

What Murasu Anjal is

An intelligent Tamil text input system for Windows and macOS. It gives you keyboards and input methods that match how you already think about Tamil, a font library drawn for real typographic work rather than screen defaults, and tools that stay out of the way while you write.

It has been in continuous development since 1985 — through Tamil’s move to Unicode, and through four decades of machines it had to keep working on.

The Anjal typefaces are all drawn in-house. That is unusual for input software, and it is why the headline at the top of this page is set in Anjal Kuyil — one of the faces the application ships.
